Jacques Renault and JDH met in a bar and 13 years later they’re still friends. When they met they were both DJing in bars around NYC but what they went on to do changed the scene in NYC. Jacques Renault went on to form Let’s Play House Records with friend Nik Mercer and has put out countless dancefloor classics. JDH started the FIXED parties with Dave P and were the first promoters to bring acts like Simian Mobile Disco, Tensnake and Aeroplane to NYC. They were named Time Out’s No.1 party in NYC this year so you know they’re lots of fun.

The guys are getting back together on July 22 for a Let’s Play House x FIXED take over (It’s free! You can RSVP here) so we asked the boys to share a little bit of history ahead of the party. Continue reading

Earthen Sea is San Francisco-based musician Jacob Long. Since 2006, Long has released a multitude of long-form audio works on a variety of formats and labels, touching on ambient, drone, minimalism, krautrock, and dub techno. Noted for its “swirling low end, pulsing melodies, propulsive barely-there rhythms” that has been described as  having a “knack for texture that creates a disorienting, lost-in-your head sensation that allows it to work as both triply ambience or immersive dance music.”

With a few releases on Ital’s Lovers Rock label, he’s joining the label showcase at Good Room on July 16. We asked Earthen Sea a couple question about music, death and food to get to know him a little better. Continue reading

Disco, house, techno, chill-out and leftfield don’t even begin to cover the range of genres Tiago Miranda plays. An accomplished crate-digger, the DJ and producer never plays two sets the same, with new records always filling up his bag. Some might call him eclectic but we call him a legend for always opening our ears to new sounds.

Hailing from Lisbon where he is a weekly resident at Club Lux, Tiago has a laid back intensity that is reflected in the expansive and inquisitive nature of his sets. Raised on good music in his home, turned on to drumming by his older brother, he came to DJ’ing via live music. He has been at it for close to twenty years, and in the last decade added production work to his resume with releases on DFA Records, Public Possession and his own label Interzona13. Inspired by Underground Resistance ‘DIY’ attitude, Rod Modell did something a lot of producers would think was crazy. In the 90s he turned down some the worlds top techno labels to start his own. But after 20 years and 50 releases later, the decision paid off.

After being submerged in the Detroit techno scene, Modell started experimenting with techno and co-founded DeepChord in the mid-90s. After 16 releases he then founded Echospace. His releases “The Coldest Season” (2007) and “Liumin” (2010) are critically acclaimed electronic music classics with critics saying “This album is bound to be one of the most fully realized listening experiences to grace your stereo this year, and is proof positive that DeepChord and Echospace are the rightful heirs to the dub techno legacy”. Dance music infused with spiky guitars and industrial beats, our kind of music. Born out of the ashes of a rock band, Red Axes has become one of the most uncompromising and consistently diverse DJs-Producers. Their debut LP,’Ballad of the Ice’ shows off their wide range and eclectic style, from the Portuguese new-wave deliciousness of ‘Papa Sooma’, to the western-like clubby psychedelia of ‘The Watkins’, to their brooding dark cover of Bauhaus’ ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’.

Since then they’ve released several records on labels like John Talabot’s Hivern Discs, Correspondent and Multi Culti. Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi have  also started their own Tel Aviv-based label Garzen Records (which means “Axe” in Hebrew). The first EP, featuring an abundance of local talents and ranging from punk to disco and beyond, will soon be released. Continue reading

Since it’s inception in 2008, Lovers Rock has become a home for artists where they can just be themselves. In an interview with Resident Advisor, label head Daniel Martin-McCormick, aka Ital, said it’s simply music, made without any blueprint in mind, guided only by each artist’s intuition and personality. “The label is not just a place to put music that I like. It’s a place to put music that I think exemplifies this very personal criteria. Earthen Sea’s music sounds like the thick, rolling clouds of San Francisco. DJ Wey’s music has a certain sort of warm glue in the middle of it that just exists. It’s not just a production technique, it’s a natural manifestation of their spirit.” Continue reading

With more than 100 releases to his name, Brennan Green’s contribution to the New York dance scene has been an important one. Green has released on acclaimed labels like Daniel Wang’s proto disco-house Balihu Records, collaborated with the surviving members of Arthur Russell’s Loose Joints band for the self-titled “Arthur’s Landing” LP and produced an acid-house-idiom cover of Hot Chocolate’s “Don’t Turn It Off” by 40 Thieves. Sean McBride aka Martial Canterel is the progenitor of American cold synth sounds of the 21st Century. Since 2002 he’s been taking bleak intellectual exercises in the dark and danceable, producing records as himself and as on half of the live duo Xeno & Oaklander (with Liz Wendelbo).

Xeno & Oaklander’s latest album ‘Topiary’ was released on Ghostly last month. Their fifth album welcomes you into its self-made world with warm synth washes, moody chamber melodies. To celebrate they are playing live at Good Room at the Capriccio party on July 1. The man behind Capriccio, Alex from Queens, asked Martial Canterel to share some of his secrets ahead of the party.
