Earthen Sea is San Francisco-based musician Jacob Long. Since 2006, Long has released a multitude of long-form audio works on a variety of formats and labels, touching on ambient, drone, minimalism, krautrock, and dub techno. Noted for its “swirling low end, pulsing melodies, propulsive barely-there rhythms” that has been described as having a “knack for texture that creates a disorienting, lost-in-your head sensation that allows it to work as both triply ambience or immersive dance music.”
With a few releases on Ital’s Lovers Rock label, he’s joining the label showcase at Good Room on July 16. We asked Earthen Sea a couple question about music, death and food to get to know him a little better.
What is your holy grail of records?
I can’t say there are too many records that I am dying to have that I am not just happy to listen to digitally/on youtube/etc if they are super expensive but one record I would love to get a physical copy of at some point would be Jon Hassell’s “Vernal Exquinox” LP. Just because he is one of my favorite artists and that is the one LP of his that has proven very difficult to track down…
If you could choose anyone to dance to one of your sets who would it be?
I really don’t have an answer for this? I mean I’m just happy/excited that anyone is into it enough to be interested and responding at all let alone dancing…
Has the dance music industry changed for better or worse since you started playing/making music?
Really I feel so far outside of any music industry let alone the dance music industry that I really have no perspective on this at all. I’m just making music in my own space and fitting in where I fit in I guess.
What would be your last meal on earth and to which sound track?
Honestly an awesome pepperoni pizza and a 6 pack of Anchor Steam while listening to John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” would be a pretty ideal last meal for me…

Abstract polyrhythmic grooves with sparse trippy sounds and deep spoken word vibes.

Jan Jelinek’s glitch/techno/whatever alter ego…deep bass and abstract/spare sound design…hits the spot…
Vladislav Delay – Pietola
I’ve been revisiting a lot of his catalog recently and could pick any number of his tracks but this one is great. Spacious ambience, drifting percussion, really creates a seemingly physical space to enter and dwell within while you are listening.
Anjou – Lamptest
I really should just say this whole album since I feel it works really well just listening straight through but this is the first track on it. New project from 2/3s of the band Labradford. Abstract electronic pieces with some processed and some live drums at points…really great stuff…
