For more than 20 years Fred Peterkin has been releasing some of the gentlest soul infiltrated four-to-the-floor house creations you can get. Whether it’s under Fred P or his alias Black Jazz Constortium, he listens to his heart and soul, then to the susurrus of the music market.

He came up through the NYC house scene in the 90s, being inspired by the likes of Junior Vasquez, Frankie Knuckles and DJ Disciple. The sites and sounds of the music world inspired him to make his own music and eventually start his own label, Soul People Music. Continue reading

Paul Raffaele and Barbie Bertisch are two of the hardest working DJs in New York. Besides playing regular gigs across Brooklyn, the pair also have two radio shows (on The Lot Radio and klangbox.fm), run the Most Excellent Unlimited record label and put out the Love Injection fanzine every month. They also host Classic Album Sundays at Good Room with Ron Like Hell. On top of this, they also work 9 to 5.

But they do it for the love and it’s rare to see a pair as passionate as these two. They’re playing at the FIXED party on March 5 so we asked these partners in crime to interview each other ahead of their set. Continue reading

Hugo Capablanca and Willie Burns have known each other for about 10 years. Hugo lives in Berlin while Willie holds down the fort in New York. The both run their own record labels, Discos Capablanca and W.T Records respectively. They both DJ/produce/collect records and have excellent taste in music.

While they have similarities and differences, one question remains… who has better interviewing skills? We asked the guys to interview each other ahead of their set in the Bad Room on March 3 and hilarity ensued. We’ll let you decide. Continue reading

Red Axes have a rock’n’roll approach to DJing. Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi started Red Axes out of the ashes of their post-punk/new wave band Red Cotton, giving them a unique approach to electronic music. They’re best known  for their modernized dance music infused with spiky guitars and industrial beats.

There’s something in the water in Brooklyn. Every day we see more and more all female line ups and names of female producers and DJs splattered around gig posters around town.

Discwoman has a large part to play in this. The all-female DJ platform and booking agency represents and showcasing female-identified DJ talent in electronic music. UMFANG co-founded the collective with Frankie Hutchinson and Christine Tran. As a producer she has released brilliant tapes for Videogamemusic and 1080p that combined subtle, murmuring textures and slamming, mechanical beats into something with a lot of personality. She was also named in FACT Magazine’s Top 10 house and techno producers to watch in 2016. Continue reading

Daniel.T. is one of our favorite West Coast kids. He is a DJ/producer/record collector based in Los Angeles who’s been making things happen in the disco scene for years. He is one half of the duo Cosmic Kids and has contributed music to labels such as Throne of Blood, Let’s Play House, Young Adult Records and DFA Records.

He’s back at Good Room this Saturday night, February 20, at the PopGun presents party with Yuksek. We asked him to share five songs he’s digging right now to get a feel for the vibe he’ll bring to the club this weekend. Continue reading

Atish occupies a rare space in dance music. At a time when most DJs rise to prominence primarily through their work as producers, Atish’s success has been realized through his total devotion to the art of DJing. What began at a small gig back in 2010 in San Francisco has since flowered into a magical journey around the world at clubs, festivals, and afterhours on six of the seven continents.

His sets are deep, emotive, ecstatic, an expressive journeys in melodic deep house that create lasting emotional experiences for the listener. Atish is also a natural performer, engaging the crowd with a mixture of charisma and charm. He’s been known to don costumes and wigs when he spins, a playfulness that balances the strict discipline and obsessiveness he has for DJing. Continue reading

It’s hard to know where Geoff Kirkwood ends and Man Power begins. The alter ego of the Englishman living in Mexico has blurred the lines between the person and the DJ, but this works in our favor.

Man Power’s music draws inspiration from wilfully smart-arsed influences ranging from early 20th century modernism, to late 20th century New Wave, via experimental cinema, proto-house, proto-techno, in fact proto-everything.

His somewhat experimental and pop textured debut eponymous album on Jennifer Cardini’s Correspondant label released in 2015 was received with effusive reviews across the board and sits comfortably with his other eminent releases on the likes of Hivern Discs, Throne of Blood, Infine and Ene Japan. So you want to throw a party but don’t know any DJs. It’s hard to imagine but in Lüneburg in 1997, Matthias Reiling and Hauke Freer had no other choice but to DJ. With Matthias playing funk and soul and Hauke playing house and techno, it became the start of a long career behind the decks.

Today the boys are better known as Session Victim, a house production duo out of Germany. It was a natural progression for the friends who were both music lovers from a young age. Matthias spent many years playing in punk and hardcore bands while Haute skipped school to go to record shops.

“We spent a lot of time together hanging out and listening to music. We both played but never together,” Matthias said. Continue reading
