It’s rare to find someone who knows music like Mike Huckaby. He is one of those guys who knows all the roots and culture of electronic dance music. The Motor City native brings together the best sounds of Detroit techno and house into a soulful groove that one can’t help but dance to for hours and hours on end.

Since the 1990s Mike has been a tastemaker, educator and sound designer who has done so much for Detroit electronic music. He was behind the once legendary Record Time store and he teaches music production with Native Instruments and Ableton software at Youthville. Continue reading

Since 2010 it’s been raining house music in the New York underground scene thanks to Dan Wender and Blacky II. As co-creators and resident DJs of the ever evolving RINSED parties they mix of classic New York & Chicago style house and UK influenced club music that has set the scene for many debauchery filled evenings & hazy, smoke filled mornings.

The boys are on warm up vibes for Jam City on April 8 (tickets available here). We wanted to get inside their heads ahead of the party so we asked Dan and Blacky to interview each other. The results were fascinating. Their conversation goes from existential questions about social media, to how underrated Joey Bada$$ is and workouts on the dancefloor. Enjoy! Continue reading

Carry Nation was a woman who wanted to stop everyone partying and used to attack bars with a hatchet. The Carry Nation, on the other hand, is quite the opposite. DJs Nita and Will Automagic throw parties that keep you carrying till dawn. Oh, and they make some beats too.

Influenced by their NYC surrounds and the global DJ community, the boys have been throwing down since 2012 with guests like Hercules and the Love Affair, Juliana Huxtable and Eli Escobar. They’re starting a monthly residency at Good Room on April 9 (Tickets available here) with guests like Lauren Flax, Dandylion, Bearcat and Mister Wallace. Good Room caught up with the guys to find out just what The Carry Nation is all about. Continue reading

If you’ve been to any club night in NYC there’s a good chance you’ve seen Dino Calvao dancing right up the front. He’s a regular fixture in the scene since 1976 and you can spot him at Good Room nearly every weekend. He’s been DJing since he was 18 and loves any kind of music that will make him dance.

It’s Dino’s birthday this Thursday so he’s jumping on the decks before Joakim and Paul Raffaele for a special birthday set (It’s a free party. You can RSVP here). We asked Dino to share some of his favorite NYC clubbing experiences after 40 years on the dancefloor. Needless to say, if you can name it, he was there. Continue reading

Music, art and fashion, Joakim ticks every box. In the music world the Frenchman has produced five albums and runs two record labels, Tigersushi and Crowdspacer. In the art world he won the Silver Lion with Camille Henrot at the Venice Biennale for their piece Grosse Fatigue. Legend is a word that gets thrown around a lot but when it comes to Justin Strauss, there isn’t a word to better describe him. Justin was just 17 when his glam rock band Milk ‘N’ Cookies got signed to Island Records in the 1970s. This lead to him spinning of some of New York’s most fabled clubs, starting at the Mudd Club and spinning his way through The Ritz, Limelight, Area and Tunnel.

Over the years he’s also built up a reputation for his production skills, remixing and producing more than 200 records, working with artists like Depeche Mode, Tina Turner, B-52s, Luther Vandross, Malcolm McClaren and Goldfrapp. In 2016, he’s still doing his thing in the city and abroad and is one half of synth-focused duo a/jus/ted, alongside Teddy Stuart, as well as part of Whatever/Whatever with Bryan Mette. Nathan Gregory Wilkins is an enigma. He’s been in the music game for two decades, making and playing music that is something else. From listening to his fortnightly radio show on NTS, with Ivan Smagghe, you can hear there’s a whole lot of stuff going on inside his head. He brings together a wide range of influences, from disco and new wave to hip hop and industrial, in an offbeat way that will keep your feet moving for hours.

Nathan is the founder of the revered History Clock label. Over the years he has held numerous residencies, including those at Boombox, Electric Stew, and David Lynch’s Paris club Silencio, and he recently started a new monthly with Joe Spurgeon (The Horrors). Nathan and Richard X have teamed up for a new music project, Cowboy Rhythmbox, which was recently signed to Erol Alkan’s Phantasy label. Continue reading

Alex From Tokyo is truly an international man of mystery. Born in Paris, raised in Tokyo and now based in NYC, his universal upbringing has inspired his truly global taste in music. He has a record collection that would be hard to beat, and also produces music and release music through his label World Famous.

Having lived in Tokyo more than 20 years since he was a kid, Alex developed into one of the strongest crossover DJ’s in Tokyo in the 90s and also became a key person connecting the world and Japan. He produces music as Tokyo Black Star with his partner Isao Kumano and phonon. Late last year Alex launched his label World Famous and has a new record coming out this month with Bing Ji Ling. Two legends of the underground dance scene come together this Saturday night with Amsterdam’s Rush Hour Records founder Antal playing alongside the man responsible for San Francisco’s Sunset Sound System and No Way back parties, Solar.

Antal is a hugely versatile DJ that can wave together house and techno or Afro and disco just as ably. He gained notority through his faultless record label and cherished store. As well as releasing the most exciting new music, the label is famed for its on-point re-issues of forgotten old classics whilst the shop stocks records bought on crate digging trips around the world. Many people would be strangers in life if it wasn’t for music. This rings true for Remain and Max Pask. A few years back Remain sent some tracks to Max Pask’s record label, Throne of Blood, and the rest is history. The music that Remain sent ended up being his EP ‘Mlle Caro’, which Max ended up remixing on his label. and then Frenchmen ended up making a couple EP’s together on both Throne of Blood and Remain’s label Meant Recordings.

The pair don’t often get to play together, with Remain based in Paris and Max in New York, but we’re fortunate enough to have both the music makers in Brooklyn at the same time for the FIXED party on March 11. The pair will be taking over the Bad Room for a night of leftfield house, oddball techno and electronic jams. We got the guys to interview each other ahead of the party and we might be lucky enough to get some new music as a result. Continue reading
