As far a stories go, they don’t get much more New York than this. Matthias Heilbronn relocated from Germany to New York City after being introduced to underground house music culture when he heard seminal DJ Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage. Through his job at Axis Studios, he learned engineering, programming and editing under the tutorship of mentor Francois K. He became roommates with house music icon Frankie Knuckles and would soon have the privilege to work with legends like Larry Levan and Tom Moulton.

Matthias became renowned by heads for his soulful garage house sound, playing at storied NYC clubs like Limelight and Twilo in the 90s. He has played internationally at Ministry of Sound and Fabric in London, Pacha and Space in Ibiza and Tresor in Berlin. Over the years he has remixed everyone from Soul II Soul, Chaka Khan and Donna Summer to Beyonce and Tom Jones.

Today, he continues to push the boundaries every time he steps behind the decks. He manages to flawlessly move from Detroit Techno to 80’s Disco Classics, German Tech to Classic Chicago House, Vocal House to Afro, Reggae to Drum & Bass and Hip Hop to Deep House without missing a beat. He believes that understanding and embracing the past will open the path to the future, whether that is through the music he plays or the technology that he uses. No set ever sounds the same, but one thing is guaranteed; he always knows how to work a crowd.

Matthias returns to Good Room on March 17, celebrating his birthday in the Bad Room with a slew of secret special guests. He’s put together the 114th Good Room Podcast ahead of the party, bringing all that history and soul to the series. You can get tickets to the party (where Nicky Siano will be celebrating his birthday in the Good Room) via Resident Advisor.
