“I mostly start with some techno stuff. Not always, but you give the illusion that it will be like that and then after 45 minutes you just drastically change it by putting in some kind of acid record or something like that” Niels Luinenburg told Resident Advisor in 2012.

It’s an approach that he’s had to his DJ sets since he started in 2008, where no two sets are ever the same. Although his productions as Delta Funktionen are based in the techno genre, you’re likely to hear electro, Italo, house and techno within quick succession during his sets with the intention of laying down some ‘serious fun’.

Originally from the north of Holland, Niels moved to Berlin in 2012 before starting his label Radio Matrix in 2014. Originally started as place to put out his own tracks, the vinyl imprint has also become a place for his friends, with Bodem releasing a 12″ EP on the label.

He’s also released EPs and LP’s on Delsin with Chicago, Detroit, electro and Italo influences. He is known for using analogue and digital tools in exciting new ways that bare resemblance to the past whilst always looking forwards.

He’s back in New York for the first time in six years, playing at Good Room on June 23 alongside R Gamble, Justin Cudmore and Der Panther (the party is free with RSVP before midnight – http://bit.ly/28M3h0I). We asked Niels to share some of his secrets ahead of his set.

What is your holy grail of records?

If you could pick anyone to dance to your sets who would it be?

My mom. Always good to let her shake her hips.

Has the music industry changed for better or worse since you started DJing?

For sure, but it’s always changing, so I don’t really know if its for the good or the worse. I believe you just have to do what you feel like and find your own way in it without getting too distracted by hypes and cowboys.

What would be your last meal on earth and to what soundtrack?

A typical Dutch ‘Broodje kroket’ while listening to Aphex Twins Selected Ambient Works 85-92!
