DJ Spun is a DJ’s DJ. Spinning since the early `90s, first in California before heading east for NYC, talk to anyone in the scene and they’ve got much love and respect him. Jason Drummond (aka DJ Spun) is the man behind Rong Music which was responsible for bringing the disco-edit craze to the US. All those who love sparse, jangling beats, synth flourishes, handclaps and cowbells sounds have Jason to thank.

Although his productions are based in the electronic genre, his personal journey through music began with punk rock then through hip hop and the birth of house and continues to this day. It’s this variety that has made the parties he throws the stuff of legend. For seven years the curator of MoMA P.S.1’s prestigious Warm Up Music series and the All Night Rong parties with DJ Harvey. Last year he curated the Coney Island Art Walls series.

As well as doing his own productions he has collaborative projects “BlakSpun” with Mark Bell (aka Blakkat) and live/electronic group “Loose Control Band” with Jonah Sharp (Spacetime Contimuum, Reagenz).

When it came to picking someone to warm up for acid house legend A Guy Called Gerald on May 28, we couldn’t think of anyone better. DJ Spun shared with us five Chicago House Classics to get us ready for Saturday night’s party (buy your tickets here).

Fingers Inc. – Can You Feel It

One of the original tracks to inspire this movement.  Still sounds as unique and intriguing today as when it came out in the 80’s.

Sterling Void & Paris Brightledge – It’s All Right

Music is the healing force of the world. It’s what brings us together.

Phuture – Slam!

Phuture are the originators of the acid house sound. Please send your thoughts and prayers to Phuture’s DJ Spanky aka Earl Smith who suffered a stroke this last week. Get well soon my friend.

MD III – Face The Nation

One of my all time favorite acid house tracks by the legendary “Chosen Few” DJ, Mike Dunn with additional vocals from Hip House pioneer Tyree Cooper.

Kickin’ Kim K. – So In Love

Romantico!

DJ Spun is playing at Good Room on May 28 with A Guy Called Gerald and Nicky Siano. Grab your tickets here.
