PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION – ‘AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY’
Prince had made his interior world sound fascinating and utopian on ‘Purple Rain’, but ‘Around the World in a Day is filled with cryptic religious imagery, bizarre mysticism, and confounding metaphors which were drenched in heavily processed guitars, shimmering keyboards, grandiose strings, and layers of vocals. As an album, the record is a bit impenetrable, requiring great demands of the listener, but individual songs do shine through: “Raspberry Beret” is a brilliant piece of neo-psychedelia with an indelible chorus, “Pop Life” is a snide swipe at stardom that emphasizes Prince’s outsider status, “Condition of the Heart” is a fine ballad, “America” is a good funk jam, “Paisley Park” is heavy and slightly frightening guitar psychedelia.

CLASSIC ALBUM SUNDAYS
CAS founder Colleen Murphy asked herself and her friends, “When is the last time you listened to an album from beginning to end? And sticking it on in the background while working on the computer, talking on the phone or doing chores around the house DOES NOT COUNT. I mean sitting down and giving the album your full attention.” For most, it had been a while, so she decided to gather world class audio equipment, find a space and see what would happen. Colleen started hosting events in London in 2010 with Ron Like Hell starting the NYC chapter in 2012. Since then, Barbie Bertisch and Paul Raffaele have joined the team and once a month they bring a classic album to light by sharing the music that inspired it and telling the story behind it before playing the full LP on our audiophile system.

DJ SPINNA
For the past 15 years DJ Spinna has been hosting the Soul Slam party. The idea came from combining the two masters of soul, Prince and Michael Jackson, into one night on the dancefloor. DJ Spinna has been a cornerstone in the hip hop world since the late-90s with a steadfast work ethic, an obsessively extensive vinyl library and the willingness to pursue the full extents of his roots (Funk, Soul R&B and Jazz), foundation (Hip-Hop) and future (Electronic/Dance music) without any restraints. DJ Spinna made much of his first impression on listeners as the musical background of his group The Jigmastas (having released an impressive slew of 12” singles on his then self-run label Beyond Real during this time) as well as providing the canvats for an array of that era’s lyrical giants including Eminem, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch and De La Soul.
