Justin Strauss and Billy Caldwell have both played their part in dance music history; Justin in New York in the 1980s at venues like the Mudd Club, The Ritz and AREA and Billy in Manchester at venues like The Hacienda and HOME in the UK.

After the pair met in 2002 it didn’t take long for them to collaborate. Billy convinced Justin to come out of retirement to play at Groovejet and ever since they’ve played hundreds of gigs together. Though he looks young, Jules has been mixing music across his native New York City for years under a variety of aliases. With a distinct, versatile mixing style and an unparalleled selection of techno and house that belies his age, you won’t find many other DJs quite like him. During his time working at famed record store Halcyon the shop, his profile only increased, following in the footsteps of an elite group of New York DJs that have risen to the top. Since leaving the shop, Jules has continued to work on a series of projects: throwing parties, spinning at spots across the city, composing music, and his own website (a forthcoming creative outlet for music journalism, design, and more). Prepare to be welcomed into the world as he sees it in 2016.

This mix was recorded live at Shift/Mode in Bushwick on April 9th, 2016 on two turntables and a mixer at around 3AM.

Jacques Renault is a DJ and producer from the Washington, D.C. area who lives and works in Brooklyn. He runs Let’s Play House, a roving house, disco, and techno party as well as an imprint of the same persuasion, with friend and partner, Nik Mercer. Night after night after night in New York, there’s always a party. While some of them tend to blur together into one big party haze (thank you smoke machines), there are certain nights that you’ll never forget.

After moving to NYC in the late ’90s, Ron Like Hell has been a staple in the scene. Whether you’ve seen him behind the decks at Wrecked with his partner in crime Ryan Smith, talking about some of the best music of all time at Classic Album Sundays or recommending records at Academy Records, all of his experiences have shaped him into the DJ he is today. We asked Ron to share five of his favorite musical experiences the city has given him over the years to learn just what gets his feet moving ahead of his set at Good Room on April 23 (grab your tickets here). Lenny Posso has been part of the NYC dance music culture for more than two decades. Relishing in all things techno and house since day one, starting as a dancer in all of New York City’s famous hotspots in the early 90’s, eventually taking to the decks around 96.

He’s an event promoter and currently label manager of 3 successful underground labels; Thema Recordings, Chronicle Records and Thema Digital. This year marks the 10th year anniversary of Thema with almost 100 releases spanning the labels and no sign of slowing down, the labels have built a reputation for putting out some of the most cutting edge, abstract, techno and house music coming out of the U.S. today. As a DJ, she exudes calm confidence and impeccable style. Performing internationally for years, Lauren is technically superlative and delivers a host of Chicago, Detroit and New York influenced house music. She’s also worked with artists like Sia, Kim Ann Foxman, Romy XX and Tricky.

Lauren put together a mix of dark, spacey house tracks for the 42nd Good Room Podcast ahead of her set at The Carry Nation party on April 9. Tickets available here – bit.ly/1qqpRCN

Since 2010 it’s been raining house music in the New York underground scene thanks to Dan Wender and Blacky II. As co-creators and resident DJs of the ever evolving RINSED parties they mix of classic New York & Chicago style house and UK influenced club music that has set the scene for many debauchery filled evenings & hazy, smoke filled mornings.

The boys are on warm up vibes for Jam City on April 8 (tickets available here). We wanted to get inside their heads ahead of the party so we asked Dan and Blacky to interview each other. The results were fascinating. Their conversation goes from existential questions about social media, to how underrated Joey Bada$$ is and workouts on the dancefloor. Enjoy! Continue reading
